Rutgers - Center for Computational and Integrative Biology - MS and PhD Programs

Center for Computational and Integrative Biology

September 22, 2015

Greetings,

The Center for Computational and Integrative Biology (CCIB) is an exciting new initiative for Rutgers University Camden Campus. The CCIB was established to reflect the cross-departmental approach to biological research among faculty. The Center brings together collaborative research and teaching of five departments: Biology, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, and Physics. The Graduate Program in Computational Biology offers Master’s and PhD level degrees. Students in the Center are given the opportunity to use interdisciplinary approaches to study the complexity of biology.

Attached please find information on our MS and PhD programs. I greatly appreciate if you could distribute these opportunities among your students.

Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

LSA Chemistry - University of Michigan

Graduate Study - University of Michigan

The Chemistry graduate program at the University of Michigan is highly interdisciplinary and covers traditional areas of Chemistry and Biochemistry as well as emerging areas at the interface with Applied Physics, Material Science, Medicine, Engineering and Science Education.  Students in the U-M Chemistry graduate program come from a wide range of backgrounds.  Our graduate curriculum combines courses that provide a solid foundation in the core areas of Chemistry as well as advanced courses tailored to specialized interests.  Our graduate students participate in a unique research rotation system, providing the opportunity to try out different areas of Chemistry before choosing a research mentor.  Following the choice of a research group, our students work as part of interdisciplinary teams that often include students and researchers from a broad range of other programs.

Our graduate program provides support (including family health and dental insurance) through a combination of sources to students during their first year.  During subsequent years, graduate students in good standing generally receive financial support, including summer salary and family health and dental insurance, through their mentor's grants. There are also opportunities to participate in a number of different training grants and teaching opportunities.  You will find detailed information on our web site, which we invite you to explore at http://www.lsa.umich.edu/chem.

GOLEAD Program at University of Delaware - November 22, 2014

The University of Delaware (UD) is asking for your help in identifying talented undergraduate students to participate in the GOLEAD (Graduate Opportunities: Learn, Engage And Discover) program on November 22, 2014. The program aims to increase enrollment of students from underrepresented backgrounds in PhD studies in the "chemical sciences" by informing and inspiring talented seniors on the benefits of a graduate education in the following three areas: Chemistry/Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering.

This all-expense-paid weekend will include interactive workshops, engaging presentations, and exciting networking events.

To participate, students who might consider a PhD in the chemical sciences must be nominated by a faculty member from an institute of higher education.  If you know of a promising junior or senior student who may benefit from GOLEAD, please nominate them using this simple form.

Nominated students will be asked to complete a short application that includes unofficial transcripts and a short statement of purpose.  All application materials must be completed by October 13th.  See website for complete timeline.

The goal of GOLEAD is to increase the diversity of qualified applicants to PhD programs in science and engineering throughout the United States and it is modeled after the highly successful MIT ACCESS program.  While this program is hosted at UD, participation neither obligates seniors to apply nor guarantees future admission for study at UD.

If you have any questions about the program, please do not hesitate to contact the GOLEAD program staff at golead@dbi.udel.edu.

Bryn Mawr College Graduate Studies Open House - October 26th

Bryn Mawr College Graduate Program in Chemistry has been producing Ph.D. chemists for over 100 years, yet our program is often unknown because of its small size.  Our program is distinctive in that it is located at an elite undergraduate college renown for its scholarship.  The small size of our program creates strong and personal connections between graduate students and faculty mentors. And since our program is housed within a vigorous undergraduate institution, the value we place on quality teaching is transferred to our graduate students in their training. Many of our graduate students choose Bryn Mawr precisely for this valuable teacher mentoring since they plan to pursue a career in academia.  Although the environment for graduate work is unique at Bryn Mawr College, the aims and requirements of the graduate program are similar to those at larger research institutions.  Ph.D. students must successfully complete coursework, oral exams, and proposals, as well as give research presentations at external conferences, as part of their development as Ph.D. scientists.

Bryn Mawr College is a small liberal arts college 20 minutes west of Philadelphia, located in a beautiful suburban environment. There is easy access to Philadelphia by train and a consortial arrangement exists that provides our students access to the University of Pennsylvania for courses and/or facilities when needed.

If you feel Bryn Mawr might offer an attractive environment for some of your students to pursue graduate studies in chemistry, please direct them to the website for our graduate program:
http://www.brynmawr.edu/chemistry/graduate/. At the website you can learn about our faculty and their research areas, see where our current students come from, and read why they chose Bryn Mawr for graduate studies towards a Ph.D.

We will be hosting a Graduate Open House on Oct. 26th. This is a terrific opportunity for students to meet faculty and current students and see first hand what doing graduate work in a liberal arts environment would be like.  I will be sending a small poster (see attached) by US mail that advertises our Open House on Oct. 26th. Please mention this opportunity to any of your students who might be interested. Students may email me to register for the event.

If you or your students have any questions, please contact me.

Jonas Goldsmith

Associate Professor of Chemistry
Director of Graduate Studies in Chemistry
